Hoonah Indian Association Lawsuit
Notice to residents of Hoonah, Alaska
January 18, 2018
The purpose of this notice is to inform Hoonah residents of an ongoing lawsuit related to the Hoonah
Cannery Road Rockfall Mitigation and Walking Trail Accessibility Upgrade Project (Cannery Road Project).
In January 2015, the Hoonah Indian Association (HIA) and the City of Hoonah contracted to complete the
Cannery Road Project. There are disagreements between HIA and the City regarding the Cannery Road
Project. Because of these disagreements, on November 20, 2017, HIA filed a lawsuit against the City.
The lawsuit is called Hoonah Indian Association v. City of Hoonah, and was filed in the Juneau Superior Court,
Case No. 1JU-17-980 CI. The City denies and disagrees with the claims alleged by HIA in the lawsuit.
The City believes it is important to keep the residents of Hoonah informed of this lawsuit. The City will be
posting pleadings, motions and other documents filed with the Juneau Superior Court in the lawsuit on
the City’s website, and will make hard copies of some pleadings and motions available at City Hall, Hoonah,
Alaska.
The City will post notice of City Council Meetings that the Hoonah City Attorney will be present at to
discuss the status of the lawsuit.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the lawsuit, the City will do its best to respond.
